Croutons
Wikipedia knows it all: “The average (median) American consumes 55 pounds of croutons every year, according to the American Crouton Institute, located south of Old Town in Alexandria, Virginia.” (see article - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crouton) Can this figure be true? What a croutons crazed country must the US be?
It is indeed a fact that croutons are tasty. Put them onto the salad and you gain some crispyness, crunch and extra flavor. What is also a fact is that many people by croutons in large bags and put them onto anything from soups to salads.
How sad, since making your own croutons is so easy and the crunchy results taste so much better!
Cut bread into cubes (virtually any type of bread can be used). Some people prefer using stale bread, since the croutons will be crunchier and require shorter baking time. Sprinkle the cubes with oil or melted butter and add your favorite chopped herbs. Bake them it in the oven at medium-low heat until brown and crispy. Do not forget to turn them from time to time! They can keep a while in a closed container, so better make a lot!
